South West wedding venue guide

Welcome to your South West wedding venue guide! If you’re on the hunt for the perfect wedding venue in the South West, you’re in exactly the right place. Getting engaged is incredibly exciting, but the moment you start thinking about venues, the sheer amount of choice can quickly feel overwhelming.

Maybe you already have your dream location in mind, or perhaps you’re just beginning your search. Either way, this guide is here to inspire you. Below, you’ll find plenty of ideas and links to some of the incredible South West wedding venues I’ve been lucky enough to visit over the years. From breathtaking manor houses to cosy rustic pubs in the heart of the city, there’s something here for every couple.

Rustic Barns & Farms

Scattered across the beautiful British countryside are countless charming farms and converted barns, each offering a wonderfully relaxed setting for your wedding day. These venues often feature neutral yet characterful spaces, perfect blank canvases where you can add your own personal touch and style.

Their rural surroundings provide endless opportunities for laid-back couple portraits. Whether it’s wandering into open fields, exploring woodland, or simply soaking up the sweeping views, you’re never far from stunning natural scenery. And if you’re lucky enough to catch a golden sunset, the results are always magical.

If you’re dreaming of a super-chilled celebration with rustic charm and plenty of space to breathe, a barn or farm venue is definitely one to consider.

Weekend Venues

Many couples choose to celebrate their wedding over an entire weekend, giving them even more time to enjoy with their nearest and dearest. Guests can arrive on the Friday, settle in, and start getting to know anyone they haven’t met before. Lots of weekend venues offer on-site glamping or a dedicated field for camping, creating a fun, relaxed atmosphere that lasts the whole weekend.

A weekend setup also helps build excitement for the main event on Saturday. With the decor arranged the day before, you can remove much of the stress from your wedding morning, leaving only the final touches to organise, so you can concentrate on your hair and makeup. And when the celebrations draw to a close on Saturday night, your guests won’t have far to go before collapsing into bed!

Sunday often becomes a chilled-out day spent reminiscing about all the emotional, hilarious, and unforgettable moments from the day before. Stoke up a BBQ, crack open some cold beers or a bottle of wine, and continue soaking up the venue and the time with your loved ones before heading back to reality.

Marquees, yurts & Tipis

Marquee, yurt and tipi weddings are perfect for carefree party lovers and festival-goers at heart. Their informal setup gives you total freedom to shape the day exactly how you want it. If you’re lucky enough to have access to suitable land, you can even host the entire celebration yourself. Many couples choose to complete the legal paperwork at a registry office beforehand, allowing them to enjoy a truly personalised ceremony surrounded by the people they love, without worrying about legal formalities.

I’ve photographed many weddings just like this, where close friends or family members have taken on the role of celebrant. With no restrictions on licensed ceremony locations, you’re free to choose a place that holds real meaning, perhaps under a favourite tree, beside a family barn, or in a meadow full of memories. You can even weave in personal touches like a sing-along to make the festivities feel even more joyful and unique.

Since these celebrations typically take place between April and September, we’re able to make the most of the great outdoors for your photos. I always keep an eye out for beautiful backdrops, sweeping views, warm golden-hour light, colourful meadows, crop fields, and even rustic doors or textured walls. With so much natural beauty around, your images are guaranteed to feel relaxed, real, and full of atmosphere

City Weddings

Let’s not forget the incredible options our cities have to offer. Urban areas are filled with super cool, unique, and characterful venues that make amazing backdrops for a stylish, modern wedding day.

While city venues often have limited dedicated outdoor space for photos, they can be more affordable alternative to large rural locations. In terms of photos, there’s no need to worry, the urban environment offers far more photographic potential than you might expect. I love exploring the surrounding streets and uncovering hidden gems you may have walked past without noticing. Colourful doorways, eye-catching graffiti, striking architecture, and rustic brickwork all make fantastic, creative backdrops for your portraits.
