When I first spoke to Katy and James about photographing their wedding at Westminster Abbey in London, I could hardly believe it, this is one of the most iconic and historic landmarks in Britain. With a legacy that includes royal coronations and the wedding of Prince William and Princess Kate, the Abbey is steeped in tradition and history. Katy’s father, the Dean of the Abbey, was able to make it possible for them to marry in such a breathtaking and meaningful location.

I arrived in London by train with plenty of time to spare, excited and ready to document this once-in-a-lifetime event. In typical British fashion, the weather had its own plans, it turned out to be one of the wettest days during the hottest year on record! But thankfully, the forecast promised clearer skies for the late afternoon and the evening, just in time for the end of the ceremony.

Once the Abbey closed to the public, the doors were opened for a truly remarkable 4pm ceremony. Stepping inside, the grandeur of the space took my breath away. It’s without doubt the most awe-inspiring venue I’ve ever had the privilege to photograph. Guests arrived full of anticipation, many pausing to capture their own photos in front of the magnificent backdrop.

The ceremony itself was deeply personal and emotional, made even more poignant by the fact that the bride’s father conducted the service. The choir was exceptional and possibly the most moving choral performance I’ve ever witnessed at a wedding.

After the ceremony, we made our way to a private garden within the Abbey grounds. A beautifully styled marquee awaited, ready for a celebration full of love, laughter, and joy. The speeches were a perfect blend of heartfelt and hilarious, with touching words from the bride and groom, the maid of honour, best man, and a very proud father of the bride.

The atmosphere transformed almost instantly after the speeches and the dance floor filled up quickly, with a healthy dose of classic dad dancing and joyful chaos. It was a night full of unforgettable moments and pure celebration. Katy and James’ wedding at Westminster Abbey is one I will defiantly never forget!
